In other desert areas the extremes of temperature are not quite so pronounced. Deserts like the Gobi and the Great Basin Desert of the US are cold during the winter and may be covered in snow. These deserts can also experience very high temperatures in the middle of summer. The Arctic and Antarctic regions are classified as deserts because they both receive very little precipitation. These areas are freezing all year round and are sometimes called 'polar deserts'
